Life is unique. While we all live on the same planet, we all do not experience the same things. Why that is appealing to me. That is the curiosity I have which drives my ambition to be a scientist.
I like to explore things., to see how they work, why they work the way they do and how they came into existence. It is a personality characteristic that drove my parents crazy. Especially when they wanted to use the radio.
I would take the radio when they were not looking and took it apart to see what made it tick. It didn’t please my parents and I felt their disapproval on my rear end often. But the pain was worth it as I got the answers I was looking for.
Now that I am getting older I still have questions that need answering. I also still have my curiosity although I do not take other people’s possessions apart to see what made them work. I have learned to channel my curiosity in a constructive and waited till science class to do my investigation.
That is where the desire to be a scientist was born. The science class opened up a whole new world for me. It showed me the way to get answers without ruining things. Plus, I saw that there are a lot of scientific fields I can work in which would provide me the answers I need.
On top of that, I found that science could be quite interesting. It is not as drab and boring as some movies and television shows make scientists out to be. Instead, I found that the discovery of new things and new information was very exciting and newsworthy.
Science is all about obtaining knowledge. Knowing things also appeals to me. When I learn I see new aspects of the world that I had not thought existed before. I am amazed at every new piece of information that comes my way.
When it does my world gets broader and broader. That is exciting to me. Other people can race cars, climb the Himalayas or do other death-defying activities, but the thrill I get out of becoming a scientist overshadows those thrills.
When I get past the exciting part of being a scientist, I also see the huge contribution a scientist can make. There really is no limit to the contribution either. Finding cures to contagious diseases, help create new technology to help limbless people and other aspects of science show that being one is a very worthwhile career.
The hardest decision I think I will have to make at this time is deciding which field of science I want to commit to. There are just so many to choose from that it is very hard to eliminate any of them.
I am exploring my preferences right now, trying to see which of the different fields appeal to what I like and what I like to do. Also, I am exploring the requirements for those fields so I know which classes I will need to take in order to qualify for those fields.
Being a scientist is important and having the right classes makes the career a lot easier to work in. It is not about the money as some scientific fields pay better than others. What I do hope is that the field I settle on has some teaching opportunities included.
I would like to pas son my excitement for science to my students as well as open their eyes to the wonders our world contains. Teaching is also very rewarding when a concept or an idea clicks in the students’ head and they get what I am talking about.
For right now, I just need to be patient and do my research so I can make a wise decision in selecting a scientific career for me. It is not going to be easy but nothing worthwhile in this world is easy.
