Editors of newspapers and magazines receive thousands of letters, only a few of which are printed according to general interest and readability. Thus, one must remember that editorial letters should be short and to the point on certain burning issues of national or international importance or even to get rid of their grievances.

Sub: Poor sanitation in the Gorabazar area

Sir

We, the residents of this locality, are facing a grave danger to our health and lives. We are writing to you to express our dissent about the poor sanitation in our area. We would be grateful to you if you would publish this letter in full.

The drains are open and allow the free passage of filth to contaminate the well in every rain. The stench is unbearable and everyone has to cover their nose while passing through the alley. The problem appears to be the indifference of the civic staff who take no interest in keeping the surroundings clean. People also use heaps for throwing out their garbage, blocking drains, and causing a health hazard.

I strongly urge you to look into the matter and do the needful at the earliest, as a delay in this regard may render thousands of people prone to various diseases.

Yours Sincerely
Sikha Das

Sub: Deteriorating sanitary condition due to negligence of roads and drains

Sir

I would like to bring to your notice the pathetic condition of our main colony road in DLF Phase II. I have been observing with extreme concern, the deteriorating sanitation conditions in my locality.

Perhaps due to negligence, the road has not been cleaned for months now. No government agencies have taken any initiative to clean the roads. I want to point out that there seems to be a problem with overflowing rubbish bins and discarded packaging on the corner of the street. Unfortunately, this has also caused a lot of problems for traffic as the vehicles can not drive through the pile-up and the drivers are forced to take another route. It would be a great idea to clean up the streets. Perhaps, we could also take small steps like not littering. It’s the least we can do to keep our environment healthy and beautiful.

I hope this letter will reach the hands of the proper authorities and prompt them to work towards finding a resolution to this urgent matter.

Yours Sincerely
Sanjay Mukherjee

Sub: Unsanitary condition of the locality

Sir

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to bring your attention to the unsanitary conditions, a problem in our neighbourhood that has been observed by most of us as well.

The roads and footpaths around here have become dirty with waste from people walking around and the drains are also clogged with solid waste that has been washed into them. In some places, the drains have started overflowing during rains also. We understand that you work hard to keep our city clean but it seems like there is not much that you can do with it. We’re used to seeing open defecation on every corner of our city.  This is very disgusting as well as embarrassing.

As a local resident, I think it is about time we speak up about the problems that exist and continue to exist for the community as a whole. The problem at hand should actively be dealt with or else people will continue to fall ill due to poor sanitation.

Yours Sincerely
Simran Ghose

Sub: The neglected market area affects the sanitary condition of the locality

Sir

I am writing to bring to the concerned authorities’  notice the current state of the Bapu bazaar in our city. I have been observing with extreme concern, the deteriorating sanitation conditions in my locality.

Every morning, mounds of garbage are seen lying in every corner, car owners throw their littering materials and passengers spit betel juice everywhere. The common folk fail to clean up after themselves as they get accustomed to the impurity around them. The municipal corporation is supposed to clean up the marketplace regularly but it has not done anything. Even after complaints, the corporation has failed to clean up the place.

The streets are filthy, and people litter everywhere around them. The sanitary condition of our locality has gone downhill due to the inability of our local authorities to look into the matter. Besides this, the municipal workers rarely visit the marketplace, and because of this, no one pays attention to their work or speaks out against it.

We request the concerned authorities to come forward as soon as possible. Let’s join hands to make the marketplace and our locality clean.

Yours Sincerely
Meghna Pandit
