May 24, 2020; Kolkata: It was 22nd May 2020, that the Super cyclone Amphan hit West Bengal affecting 21,560 sq km of area. It was having winds with the speed of up to 190 km/h along with tremendous rainfall. The PTI reported the death of 72 individuals in this disaster

Amphan strike the coast of Digha of West Bengal at 2.30 pm on 20th May 2020, Wednesday moved towards the north-northeastwards with a speed of 27 km/ph for past 6 hours, further converted to a cyclonic storm and moved towards over Bangladesh, about 270 km north-northeast of Kolkata, reported the IMD.

This tremendous cyclone resulted in numerous loss of properties. The chief minister says 30 lakh people living in the coastal regions were shifted to the different schools which were taken as rescue sectors before the arrival of the cyclone.

The cyclone resulted in the loss of cropping as the saline waterlogged in the field, houses got smashed, over 5000 trees were uprooted resulted in the blockage of roads, the pole of electricity fell let to the state stay without electricity for few days, this also resulted in water scarcity all around the cities. The area of Sunderban got ravaged due to it.

Immediate actions were taken by the West Bengal government after the passage of the cyclone. The process of rescue team soon reached the site, 37 VHF HAM radio stations for the process and the act of clearing the road blockage was simultaneously done.

A package of Rs 10 billion was jointly decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the fund for the relief work. The CM states the Amphan created more losses in West Bengal than COVID -19 pandemic.

May 24, 2020; Kolkata: It was after 283 years that such a devastating cyclone hit the land of West Bengal, taking 72 lives and tremendous loss of properties. The howling winds smashed the Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, and North and South 24 Parganas of West Bengal. It also affected the coastland of Orissa.

Wind blowing at the speed of 150-160 kilometres per hour to 185 kilometres per hour uprooted 5000 trees, 9 lakh cattle and poultry were killed, 4.5 lakh electric poles, 10 lakh houses were damaged, embankments along the Sundarbans Raimangal, Bidyadh, 160km were ravaged off, 0.5 lakh hectares of cropping land and 58,000 hectares of fisheries were affected by the Amphan. A loss of Rs 24,000 crore of the property was claimed by the state officials.

The act of rescuing was immediately started after the passage of the cyclone. The state government distributed 50 lakh pouches of water in the Sunderban delta, further Chaitali Chakrabarty was asked by the CM to camp for the restoration process in the Sundarbans areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released Rs 1,000 crore as the relief fund for the disaster to the West Bengal Government for the restoration process and the state governments lend Rs 27,000 crore for the operation.

Different funding and non- funding NGOs started working for the distribution of food, water, and essential commodities throughout the West Bengal. Bharat Sevashram Sangha distributed food to 25,000 food in the North 24 Parganas.

The CM announced the direct transfer of Rs.20,000 to the families of the one who has lost their home in Amphan and an amount of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the families of the casualties.
