Editors of newspapers and magazines receive thousands of letters, only a few of which are printed according to general interest and readability. Thus, one must remember that editorial letters should be short and to the point on certain burning issues of national or international importance or even to get rid of their grievances.

Letters to newspapers are usually addressed to “The Editor”. The correct form of salutation is “Sir”. and not “Dear Sir”. The formal closing is Yours Truly.

Subject: The high price of essential commodities

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I venture to express my opinion against the rising prices of essential commodities.

The recent price rise is causing headache to most people and it has become impossible for them to make ends meet. It has hit the low- and middle-class people hard. Day labourers and people on fixed salaries are the worst sufferers. Not to mention meat or fish, even the prices of vegetables are going up every day. The white coloured water called milk is selling for 15 rupees a litre, the prices of rice, clothes, kerosene, medicine and other essentials are also increasing by leaps and bounds. All this has made the lives of common people miserable

Sub: Skyrocketing prices of essential commodities

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to express my deep concern over the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities which are making the lives of common people miserable.

The prices of essential commodities like pulses, vegetables, cooking oil and petrol have been rising incessantly which proves the efficiency of the government to keep inflation low. The current scenario favours the richer section of the society. The poor and middle classes of our country are not getting the food grains and pulses at a reasonable price to sustain themselves with two basic meals. Big businessmen and hoarders have created this artificial shortage of foodgrains by illegally storing them in godowns so that there is no limit to the galloping prices.

The government must take stern action against hoarding and black marketing of food items. Fair price shops must be set up in greater numbers. Moreover, people should be empathetic and food should not be wasted in social events and daily life. Along with the government, every citizen should take all necessary steps to control the price rise.

Sub: The soaring price of essential commodities.

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I venture to voice my views against the rising prices of essential commodities.

The increase in population is creating a gap between the supply and demand of all consumer goods and thus the prices of essential commodities have reached a new high. Further, a large accumulation of black money in the hands of income tax evaders and corrupt personalities plays a crucial role in the price rise of inflation-prone commodities like sugar and edible oil. In all this, the poor and the middle class suffer the most. While one section of the society enjoys all the privileges, others struggle to make both ends meet.

It is high time that proper steps are taken to stop the price rise of essential commodities. The administration seems to take little or no notice of hoarders and black marketeers so that they create an artificial scarcity in marketing leading to price rise. The price rise should be investigated to bring normalcy to the situation.

Sub: Rise in price of essential commodities.

Sir,

Allow me please to focus through the columns of your esteemed daily on the inconvenience caused due to the rise in the price of essential commodities.

The prices of all commodities have risen so much in the last few years that it has broken the neck of the common man. The increase in the prices of essential commodities like gas, oil, petrol etc. is burdening daily wage earners and employees. Managing basic household budgets has become a challenge. Children’s health is particularly at stake as milk has become a luxury due to its price. Fruits can no longer be part of the daily diet.

Under the circumstances, the government should immediately take the necessary steps to improve the overall situation. Public opinion should also be raised through your editorial column.

Yours faithfully
Raghav Seth.
