Dear Diary,

These days are so dark and dreary with news of deaths and despair hovering in the air. West Bengal is devastated as Amphan kills dozens in India. The super cyclone lashed coastal areas with winds and heavy rains. Thousands of trees have been uprooted, telephone and power lines have been brought down and people in rural areas are on the streets as their homes have been flattened. To help my state heal quickly, I joined an NGO called “UDAAN” to help flood victims. We visited several rural villages in North 24 Parganas with dry food, clothes and essentials to give some relief to the people.

When we reached the interior of the villages, I couldn’t believe my eyes, the mainland was flooded and the villagers were bracing for it. With the help of other NGOs, we relocated the authority and some schools were converted into relief camps. The NGO has decided to visit the village again with some more relief supplies. I pray to the Almighty for the normalcy of living conditions in these devastated areas and feel satisfied to have the opportunity to help the people in need.

Dear Diary,

A large area of our Midnapore district has been affected by the incessant rains of the last few days. We are petrified to know that there are several breaches in various dams and the water level of some rivers of our district is nearing the watermark. While the state government has taken steps for relief work, Dipto and I decided to join the relief work. We formed a small team of seven members and helped people according to our capacity. We bought 100 tarpaulins from our savings and distributed them to the needy.

We also collected donations. The response was overwhelming, people helped us buy food and essentials for the affected people. Students came forward with help and some eagerly joined our relief team. To our surprise, a team of five doctors and fifteen medical assistants approached us to set up a makeshift clinic in the face of probable enteric disease. I pray to God to bring us out of this situation of helplessness as soon as possible, until then we will continue with our mission.

Dear Diary,

On December 13, a cyclonic storm hit the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas. Mud huts were levelled as the storm hit the district at a speed of 120 km per hour. To make the situation more pathetic, it was coupled with a furious swell in the sea. As people became homeless and starved, I could not sit at home with my eyes fixed on the news channel. I called my few friends to form a team to help the affected people. I was surprised that even friends of my friends agreed to help.

We tried to distribute pressed rice, water, kerosene and mustard oil among the flood-affected people. You can’t hold back your tears when you see hundreds of victims waiting for relief goods brought by clubs and voluntary organisations. I never realised that there is so much satisfaction in helping people in need. I have promised all possible help to alleviate people’s suffering.

Trisha.

Dear diary,

The worst flood of the century has hit Alipurduar. Miles of it are now underwater. Crops from huge areas have been washed away. Thousands of mud-built houses have collapsed and residents of pucca houses have lost their belongings. Three helicopters and speed boats have been deployed and people have been rescued by the army and civil authorities. My mother wanted to stand by the people who lost everything due to the disaster. I supported my mother in the operation.

On the first day, my mother cooked food for fifty people and I packed the food and distributed it among the starving people. Inspired by this, other women and children came forward to help us with the cause. The next day, with the help of others, we were able to prepare food for five hundred people. While the mothers cooked the food, we children packed it and took it to the most affected areas to distribute among the people. Our school also participated commendably in the relief work. We are fighting together and have promised to continue our help until the situation gets better.

Subho.
