Sardar Patel joined the country’s freedom struggle and actively took part in the non-cooperation as well as quit India movements.

He believed in national unity and persuaded 562 princely states in the country to join together to form the Republic of India. Because of his contributions in the fight for independence as well as in the political integration of the country, he was nicknamed the ‘iron man of India’. After the assassination of Gandhi by Nathuram Godse, Sardar Patel imposed a ban on RSS, the organisation with which Godse worked. In his final years, Sardar Patel was awarded honorary doctorates by various universities. He was a senior congressman and a very well-respected leader.
