The story of Janmashtami is extremely beautiful. Krishna, the eighth child of Vasudev and Devki, was born in Mathura, in the prison of cruel Kansa. But soon after the vision of Lord Vishnu, Vasudev transferred him to the house of Nandalaal in Gokul, so as to protect his only surviving child. Lots of sweets are prepared for little Gopal on this occasion. People decorate temples and houses with flowers. This is a national holiday all over India.

Janmashtami is one of the most important festivals celebrated all over India and around the world. It celebrates the birth of our principal God, Lord Krishna. Janmashtami is mainly celebrated by Hindus, although many foreigners living in Isckon and believing Lord Krishna equally participate in it. It is a moment of extreme joy and the victory of good over evil.
Krishna, the eighth son of Devki and Vasdev survived in the prison of Kansa, is the incarnation of the mighty Lord Vishnu. After cruel Kansa, the king of Mathura received the prophecy that the eighth child will destroy him, he killed all seven newborns of the couple.
Krishna arrived to end the tyranny of Kansa. After he was born in jail, his parents received the vision of Vishnu, with orders to transfer him to the house of Nandlaal and Yashoda in Gokul. Vasudev did as commanded and the baby was saved. This divine occasion of Krishna’s birth is celebrated as Janmashtami.

The festival of Janmashtami is observed in the month of August, on the eighth night of the Krishna Paksha, since the saviour of the world, Lord Krishna was born then at midnight. Krishna, the incarnation of one of the mighty gods of the Hindu Trinity, Lord Vishnu, was born as the eighth and the sole surviving child of Vasudev and Devki. As the couple received the wish of Vishnu to take part in her womb, Devki readily agreed.
Krishna arrived on earth as the warrior to free suffering mankind from the darkness of pain and torture. As the parents received the Lord’s command, immediately on that stormy night Vasudev transferred his son into the house of Nandalaal and Yashoda in Gokul. Thus Krishna was saved and grew up safely under the care of his foster parents. Hence till today, Janmashtami is celebrated at midnight, and Krishna is seen more as the son of every household.
The birth of Krishna marks a huge change in the flow of Hindu mythology. The arrival of this incarnation of Vishnu marks the beginning of Dwapar Yuga. He is the protector, the lover, the shepherd boy, the caretaker, the prince, the king, a friend in need, and the upholder of nothing but truth and faith.
Krishna helped the suffering mankind in the war of Mahabharata and is the composer of the Bhagavat Gita. His words and slokas are of immense importance today. It shows humans the correct path of leading a happy and successful life, discarding all means of evil. Surrendering to Him is the only and best way as mentioned in the Gita. Hence his birth marks the beginning of good and beauty.
Janmashtami is celebrated not only by Hindus in India but also by the foreigners in Isckon who faithfully worship Him. Lots of sweets and butter that are favourites of Krishna are arranged. The temples and houses are decorated with flowers, lights, and colours. Krishna or little Gopal becomes the newborn baby to every household. His birthday is beautifully celebrated as one’s own.
Mathura, Vrindavan, Nabadweep are some important centres of Janmashtami celebrations. Many sports like breaking the butter-filled pot or matki are organized to increase the celebration in folds. What Christmas is to the Christians, Janmashtami is that to the Hindus. Both rejoice at the birth of their saviours, one in jail, one in the stable. The humble birth history of the two shepherds boys makes them dear to their followers.
