On this day, Hindus worship Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of speech, knowledge, wisdom, arts and music and thus, the day is also known as Saraswati Puja. Pandals are made in every neighbourhood and beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Saraswati are placed in them.

Students and school authorities start to prepare for the festival in advance. A space is chosen, cleaned and decorated with flowers, rangoli as well as other decorative items. Various materials needed for the Puja and havan are bought and arranged. Priests who do the Puja are contacted in advance. On the day of the festival, people wake up at dawn, take a ritual bath and wear yellow clothes. The colour yellow is associated with Basant Panchami as it signifies the blooming of mustard flowers during the spring season and thus, the arrival of spring.
