Basant Panchami is a major Hindu festival celebrated in India. ‘Basant Panchami’ translates to ‘the fifth day of Spring’ and is a festival that celebrates the arrival of the spring season. On this day, Hindus worship Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of speech, knowledge, wisdom, arts and music and thus, the day is also known as Saraswati Puja.

Pandals are made in every neighbourhood and beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Saraswati are placed in them. Idols of the Goddess are also kept in individual homes as well as in schools, colleges and other educational institutions. 

On Basant Panchami, people wear yellow clothes to celebrate the blooming of mustard flowers during the spring season. Decked in yellow clothes, people worship Goddess Saraswati and pray to her to be blessed with knowledge and wisdom. This festival is very significant for students as they ask the Goddess for her blessings which can help them learn better.

Many young children are made to write their first alphabet on this day. In some regions, people also celebrate the day by flying kites. Basant Panchami or Basant Utsav is a significant religious festival celebrated by Hindus. ‘Basant Panchami’ translates to ‘the fifth day of Spring’ while ‘Basant Utsav’ translates to ‘the spring festival’. Needless to say, it is a festival that celebrates the arrival of the spring season.

On this day, Hindus worship Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of speech, knowledge, wisdom, arts and music and thus, the day is also known as Saraswati Puja. Pandals are made in every neighbourhood and beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Saraswati are placed in them. 

Idols of the Goddess are also kept in individual homes as well as in schools, colleges and other educational institutions. Students and school authorities start to prepare for the festival in advance. A space is chosen, cleaned and decorated with flowers, rangoli as well as other decorative items. A beautiful idol of Goddess Saraswati is then chosen and brought to be placed in the middle of the space.

Various materials needed for the Puja and havan are bought and arranged. Priests who do the Puja are contacted in advance. On the day of the festival, people wake up at dawn, take a ritual bath and wear yellow clothes. The colour yellow is associated with Basant Panchami as it signifies the blooming of mustard flowers during the spring season and thus, the arrival of spring. 

Decked in yellow clothes, people bring offerings of fruits and sweets for the Goddess. They worship Goddess Saraswati and pray to her to be blessed with knowledge and wisdom. After the Puja and havan are complete, the blessed food is distributed among everyone present.

This festival is very significant for students as they ask the Goddess for her blessings which can help them learn better. In some regions of India, on the eve of the festival, grains like barley, wheat and gram are cooked in a ritual preparation. In a few places, people also celebrate Basant Panchami by flying colourful kites.
