He was born on December 3, 1884, in Ziradei, Siwan district, Bihar. His parents were Mahadev Sahay and Kamleshwari Devi. As the youngest member of the family, Dr. Prasad was loved by all. However, he was close with his mother and his elder brother, Mahendra. Apart from that, in 1896, Dr. Prasad was married to Rajvanshi Devi at the age of 12 and they had a son named Mrityunjay.
Dr. Prasad started his early education at the Chhapra Zilla School, Bihar and he was a brilliant student. He came first in the entrance examination of Calcutta University and received a scholarship. While studying in Presidency College, Dr. Prasad met teachers like J. C. Bose and Prafulla Chandra Roy.
In 1907, he completed his Master’s degree with a Gold medal in Economics from the University of Calcutta. Later on, Dr. Prasad started teaching English in a college in Bihar but he left the job only to study Law. After completing his Master’s degree in Law in 1915, he went further to have a Doctorate degree in Law from Allahabad University.
Dr. Prasad was greatly influenced by the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and focused to follow his path. Being a devotee of Gandhi, he urged people to boycott Western educational institutes led by the British government and became a part of Bihar Vidyapeeth.
He was the prime supporter of Gandhi’s ‘Champaran Satyagraha’ and later on, in 1920, he joined the Non-cooperation movement of Gandhi and indulged himself completely for the freedom of his country. After his three-term presidential position in the Indian National Congress, Dr. Prasad was selected as the Food and Agriculture Minister in 1946. Lastly, he became the first President ever of an independent India on 26 January 1950. However, in 1957, he was re-elected as the President and continued till 13 May 1962.
Apart from these, he wrote books like Satyagraha at Champaran (1922), Atmakatha (1946), India Divided (1946), Bapu Ke Kadmon Mein (1954), etc. Following the footsteps of Gandhi, Dr. Prasad used to lead a simple life and always stood beside the distressed people. In 1962, he was awarded India’s highest civilian award called ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his service. Unfortunately, this eminent persona took his last breath on 28 February 1963 in Patna.
