As per the report, there will be a total of 7 members in the commission under Simon’s leadership. In the ongoing session, the Indian National Congress has declared the Simon Commission as an all-white Commission. They have further declared that 7 Britishers can’t decide the fate for all Indians.

Previously the Congress leaders approached the secretary of the state for including at least two Indian members in the commission. But as the request of Congress was declined, the Indian National Congress passed a resolution for boycotting the Simon Commission under the presidency of Dr M.A. Ansari.

On the other hand, the Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah has also agreed upon the proposal of Congress for boycotting the commission. India is expecting to witness a communal harmony and reciprocal co-operation in the protest against Simon Commission.

Commission Arrived India for Reviewing Government of India Act 1919

By Suprity Acharyya

Bombay; February 4, 1928: The review Commission for 1919 Government of India Act arrived in Bombay yesterday. As per the Government of India Act 1919, the commission was supposed to visit India and review its impact.

But due to some administrative circumstantial situation, the secretary of the state for India lord Frederic Edwin Smith, the honourable Earl of Birkenhead had to issue the order of its creation 2 years earlier as reported. As per the schedule, the 7 members commission under the leadership of Sir John Simon will travel all around India and will talk with all major political parties and leaders to suggest proper reforms in future governance acts to come.

In the last session in Madras, the Indian National Congress has already boycotted the commission as no Indian member is there. The Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah has also supported the decision of Congress.

That’s why the Simon Commission had to deal with a mass protest on its arrival in Bombay. Banners and slogans like “Simon go back” were heard from the mass protesting the arrival of the commission. The commission will travel to Karachi from Bombay as scheduled.

From the bed of the hospital, he said: “I declare that the blows struck at me today will be the last nails in the coffin of British rule in India”. After spending two long years in India and detailed discussion with political parties and leaders, it submitted its final white paper to the British parliament.

As reports are coming out, in the white paper the Simon Commission has proposed to abolish the dyarchy prevalent in India as opposed by most of the political parties and leaders of the country.

Moreover, the commission has proposed for forming provincial governments in the country and further continued the communal electorate despite huge opposition from regional political parties.

The parliament of Britain is all set to pass new reforms in Indian governance in accordance with the proposals. On the other hand, in India, Congress has launched a civil disobedience movement last year under the leadership of Gandhi.

This is why the British parliament has temporarily halted introducing any new act based on suggestions of the Simon Commission.
