Special celebrations are held in places like Ayodhya, Janakpurdham, Sita Samahit Sthal and Sitamarhi, which are associated with the legend of Lord Rama and Sita. Devotees also go for a bath in the sacred river Sarayu in Ayodhya. In many places, rath yatras or chariot processions are held in which idols of Rama, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman are placed in decorated chariots and carried around the town with great joy. The sun god, Surya is also worshipped on this day as Lord Rama belonged to the Surya dynasty.
Ram Navami is also celebrated with great devotion outside of India in places like South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries where a huge number of Hindus live.
