Subject: Negative influences of advertisements

Sir,

I am a student of class 11 from Nabinpally boys school. Recently, I have had a realisation that advertisements we watch, listen or go through having a great influence on our day to day life. Most of those influences are negative for society holistically.

Nowadays, we are completely surrounded and highly dominated by advertisements in every aspect of our life. Frankly speaking, though, we become quite annoyed seeing advertisements during programs. On the contrary, We hardly buy a thing that we didn’t watch in any type of advertisements. Taking this opportunity, many corporate houses try to push their products with manipulated advertisements. Sometimes they are not worthy in terms of quality or quantity or some of them might be quite misleading and manipulating to the fact. Many times, advertisements highly influence our social mindset and eventually we end up thinking in the way the advertisement wants us to.

This is quite a matter of severe concern for common people. We should think and deal with our society in the way we want us to be, not according to those advertisements. A public awareness campaign about this issue can help to make people aware and become careful while relying on advertisements.

Yours Sincerely,
Rajesh Dutta

Subject: Advertisements are nothing but slow poisoning

Sir,

I’m an activist working to eradicate the negative influences of advertisements in our society. This letter to you intends to draw a clear picture of the issue so that common people become aware while dealing with such advertisements.

In this era of globalisation and digitalization advertisements have become one of the new norms of our day to day life. It implicitly regulates what we see, what we eat, what we wear, what we use and even where we live. This extensive domination of advertisements eventually leads to a severe negative impact on society. Many companies driven by profiteering show manipulative and misleading advertisements and try to influence people to push their products. We have seen enough evidence that companies try to impose a new type of mindset in order to marketize their products. Due to the phenomena, the natural ability to think among people is going down and advertisements have started leading their mind.

Currently, thousands of activists like me are working to wipe out this phenomenon so that people can think in their own way, naturally; not driven by any advertisement.

Yours Sincerely,
Rumi Bannerjee

Subject: Advertisements and controversies become parallel

Sir,

In recent times, we have seen many controversies have broken out due to some specific types of advertisements. This letter to you is to evaluate this issue and suggest some way forward to it.

Advertisements in every field have been quite common nowadays. Very naturally, with this wide expansion advertisements are showing negative influences on society too. In this case, we have to remember the people, companies, corporate houses who create and run advertisements, have some ideological and commercial motivation as well. Starting from 20th-century cigarettes’ advertisements to the recent fairness cream, advertisements have always tried to influence society by manipulating the natural way of living. This phenomenon is mostly driven by commercial interests. But nowadays, advertisements have started making ads on sensitive issues like social inclination, political motivation and religion as well. Very recently we have seen a few such controversies.

In my opinion, in this area of the extensive influence of advertisements, companies must take responsibility for everything they are showing in their advertisement. They should bar themselves from making ads on sensitive issues and must stick to the facts. A central regulating authority can also help to counter these negative influences of advertisements.

Yours Sincerely,
Aditya Bansal

Subject: Government to censor advertisements

Sir,

The government has recently come out with a new act to regulate and censor advertisements in every field of our country. I am writing this letter to you, to critically evaluate this issue and its impact on our country.

In recent times many advertisements were alleged to influence our society in quite a negative way. India has seen a significant number of outrageous too due to these advertisements. Many social activists have also appealed to the government to take certain actions to counter those negative influences that impacted the mindset of people. Driven by these, the government has finally come out with the advertisement (regulation and censorship) act, 2020 to deal with these issues. This act will lead advertisements to go under review by a dedicated authority before getting published. The authority can dismiss and censor the advertisement if needed. Through the act, the government can put a ban on any existing advertisement running on any field.

This act has led to many controversies as well. The government is accused of trying to suppress free speech through this act. We need to remember free speech is the backbone of democracy. Our constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19. But we also need to remember, the right to freedom of speech and expression comes with reasonable restrictions as well. The negative influences of advertisements on society need to be eradicated as soon as possible. In this case, the government must ensure non-arbitrariness and a transparent & reasonable point of view while reviewing those advertisements.

Yours Sincerely,
Barun Goswami
