Subject: People’s habitat under threat due to shopping mall construction

Sir,

Recently in my adjacent area, a shopping mall is planned to get built. Through this letter in your esteemed daily, I want to attract the attention of the higher authority that many people’s habitat is going to be under threat due to this project.

The area on which the shopping mall is planned to get built is a slum. Nearly 250-280 families live in that area. All the families have been sent notices from the owner of that land to evacuate the place. The whole area has now been sold to a foreign company who have planned to build a shopping mall. The families who live there, are quite poor and can’t afford new places. They have also approached the municipality about this issue but got no positive response.

So, this is my appeal to the government to immediately look into this matter otherwise it can result in a serious humanitarian crisis. Every human being has the right to live and government must ensure that right. What the government can do is launch a rehabilitation package for these people and try to provide them with some jobs according to their quality.

Subject: Many species’ habitats under threat due to massive forest fire in amazon

Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I want to attract the attention of the world community about the issue of massive habitat loss of many species due to the devastating forest fire in the amazon rainforest.

Amazon rainforest is known for its great contribution to maintaining the global environmental balance. The massive forest, spread across eight countries containing around 5.5 million square km area, is a habitat for around 3 million species. Recently a massive forest fire has been broken out around the Brazil and Peru part of the rainforest. A huge amount of co2 is being released because of this massive forest fire and thousands of species are dying and losing their habitat. The Brazilian government is accused of their poor efforts to control the fire. Now the fire is spreading across countries and more and more species are losing their homes. Many of these are endangered and vulnerable species and several forest tribes are also displaced.

Through this letter, I want to appeal to the world community to become aware of this matter and organise some sort of campaign to pressurize the Brazilian government to immediately take firm steps to control this disaster.

Yours Sincerely,
Rumi Bannerjee

Subject: Tsunami in the Indian Ocean and habitat loss

Sir,

Recently a massive tsunami has broken out in the Indian ocean that is causing habitat loss for thousands of people. I am writing this letter to your esteemed newspaper to attract the attention of all your readers and appeal to them to contribute in some way to save these people.

Two days back an earthquake hit the bed of the Indian ocean. As a result, a massive tsunami has broken out around the entire region. The coastal areas of Tamil Nadu have been hit most severely. Thousands of people living in these areas have been displaced from their habitat. Hundreds of people have already been found dead and many are missing. With time, the ocean is coming more forward and thousands of more people’s habitat is going to come under serious threat.

Through this letter in your esteemed daily, I want to appeal to the central government to immediately take more efficient steps and launch a rehabilitation package for these people. Besides, I earnestly request to all the readers of your newspaper to contribute as much as they can afford to the government relief fund to save these people.

Subject: Central government’s nationwide rehabilitation program

Sir,

Yesterday the central government has announced the launch of a nationwide rehabilitation program for the displaced people due to disasters. This letter to your esteemed daily is intended to evaluate this step by the government.

In a press conference yesterday, the secretary for the ministry for home has announced the rehabilitation action plan for the disaster affected people. In the last few years, our country has witnessed several major disasters and lakhs of people’s habitats had come under severe threat due to those. Under this action plan, the government has announced to provide a package of rupees 1 lakh crore to build new homes for the displaced people and rehabilitate them. The central and the state government will work in collaboration under this action plan. The government has also announced to create jobs for those people according to their capabilities.

But the fund government has allotted is accused of being quite insufficient compared to the need. Moreover, under this action plan, the government has only included the people whose habitats have come under threat due to natural disasters. Incidents that occurred due to human reasons caused habitat threats for many people have not been included under this action plan. So, the government should take these criticisms into account and revise the policy to meet these limitations.

Yours Sincerely,
Barun Goswami
